We are in the process of establishing a new family office in Phoenix, AZ, with a focus on managing the wealth and investments of a high-net-worth family. This new venture will involve building out the financial infrastructure, systems, and processes necessary to manage and grow the family’s diverse financial portfolio. We are seeking a highly skilled and proactive Lead Accountant to help establish and shape the accounting and financial operations of the office from the ground up. Position Overview:
The Lead Accountant will play a key role in the establishment of the family office’s accounting systems, processes, and reporting frameworks. Working closely with the CFO and external advisors, the Lead Accountant will help build the financial infrastructure from the ground up, ensuring smooth operations and effective management of the family’s financial matters. This role is ideal for a seasoned accountant with entrepreneurial spirit and experience in setting up accounting functions in a new venture.
Key Responsibilities:
Establish Accounting Systems & Processes:
◦ Help design and implement financial processes and systems that align with the family office’s goals.
◦ Set up the accounting software, reporting structures, and chart of accounts to ensure proper tracking of all financial transactions.
◦ Develop and document accounting procedures and internal controls to ensure accuracy and compliance.
◦ Set up automated workflows and establish a smooth month-end close process from the beginning.
Financial Reporting & Oversight:
◦ Lead the creation of financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and budget-to-actual reports.
◦ Develop customized financial reporting tailored to the family’s specific needs and investment structures.
◦ Prepare and present monthly and quarterly financial reports to the family and CFO.
◦ Assist with initial setups of investment tracking and asset management systems.
Tax Planning & Compliance:
◦ Work closely with external tax advisors to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal tax requirements.
◦ Help prepare the family’s tax filings and ensure timely submission.
◦ Build tax-efficient strategies to help optimize the family’s financial position as the office grows.
Investment Reporting:
◦ Work with external investment managers to ensure accurate reporting of portfolio performance.
◦ Set up systems to track and report on various investments, including private equity, real estate, and alternative assets.
◦ Assist with valuation and reconciliation of investments as the portfolio evolves.
Establish Financial Controls:
◦ Implement a strong internal control framework to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
◦ Collaborate with the CFO to review and monitor financial risks and opportunities.
◦ Establish accounting policies and procedures to streamline operations while maintaining compliance.
Collaboration & Team Building:
◦ Help build the accounting and financial team, providing leadership and training as needed.
◦ Establish communication channels with legal, investment, and operations teams to ensure accurate financial data and effective decision-making. ◦ Work closely with the family’s advisors to ensure seamless financial coordination.
Qualifications:
Education:
◦ Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. A CPA or equivalent certification is preferred.
Experience:
◦ Minimum of 5-7 years of accounting experience, ideally with experience in setting up accounting systems and financial processes for new ventures, family offices, or high-net-worth individuals.
◦ Proven track record of establishing accounting operations, including developing financial systems, reporting, and internal controls.
◦ Experience in managing complex investments, including private equity, real estate, and other alternative assets, is a plus.
Skills & Abilities:
◦ Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, tax regulations, and compliance for high-net worth individuals.
◦ Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.).
◦ Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
◦ Ability to establish and maintain detailed financial records while managing competing priorities.
◦ Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
◦ A proactive, self-starter attitude with an entrepreneurial mindset.
