Job Description
ARM Group is seeking a Staff Engineer who will collaborate with a dynamic team of multi-disciplined engineers and scientist, project managers, CAD designers, and other staff to service our client’s needs with engineering design and analysis of land development projects primarily throughout Virginia and the surrounding region. The primary function of this position is to assist in the development and drafting of design plans and reports for a variety of project types including commercial, retail, multifamily, mixed use, industrial and more. Areas of emphasis include site design, roadway design, utility design, grading and erosion control plans, storm sewer design, and water quality BMP design.
A working knowledge of civil and environmental engineering best-practices with a focus on identifying, communicating, and solving engineering and permitting challenges that may impact a project’s overall feasibility, cost, or constructability is required. In addition to early-stage due diligence and engineering coordination, the position will also grow into project management responsibilities including: local on-site support involving interfacing with regulators and other officials to support permit approvals; communicating with clients on technical issues or concerns; performing engineering calculations; preparing detailed designs, interconnection coordination; construction administration, budget management, and QA/QC of projects in construction.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Prepare, review, and update design drawings and technical reports.
- Assess and mitigate project risks.
- Perform and/or check technical calculations.
- Use the principles of engineering to develop solutions to permitting, design, and construction challenges.
- Provide technical support for projects including hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and modeling (stormwater detention and water quality BMP design), site grading and design, erosion and sediment control plans, etc.
- Research regulations, codes, zoning ordinances, and other requirements as needed to ensure project compliance.
- Communicate with Local Governmental agencies who review and approve plan submissions.
- Prepare reports, letters, emails, permit applications, etc. for projects.
- Observe, monitor, and document fieldwork while analyzing problems and possible solutions.
- Collaborate with other team members to meet deliverables on projects and obtain further knowledge and experiences.
- Effectively communicate with key stake holders including clients, project managers, CAD designers, and other technical members of the project team.
- Pro-actively recognize conditions and problems of non-routine nature, develop solutions, and seek guidance when needed.
Requirements
Base Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or related engineering discipline.
- Basic civil engineering knowledge which may include land development, site design, post construction stormwater management design, Erosion and Sediment (E&S) design and permitting and permitting.
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills: articulate, assertive, and confident.

- Reasonably proficient in MS Office 365, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Preferred Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Engineering
- Engineer-in-Training License
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience using the Virginia Stormwater Management Regulations
- Hydrology and Hydraulics (H&H) experience, including surface water runoff modeling, stream response and floodplain interaction.
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, HydroCAD (or similar stormwater software), HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS.
