Sand Creek Dairy LLC Dairy Livestock Operations Supervisor Position
We are looking to add a motivated and experienced Livestock manager to the Sand Creek Dairy team.
Located in Hastings, MI, Sand Creek Dairy is a 1400 head milking herd where we focus on all areas of farming, livestock and nutrient management. With a cows first approach, we are looking to add a quality individual to our team to assist with the management of the milk cow herd and youngstock on site.
We take pride in our great production, genetics, feed quality and team. Our Holstein herd regularly averages over 100lbs and our Jersey herd regularly averages 70lbs. We have multiple females in the top 1% of their respective breeds, consistently make award-winning feeds, and have a great team of individuals who have been a key part of the operation for many years. While we have been successful for over 110 years, we are always striving to reach the next level with our herd!
This role will include:
- Managing the hospital cow program, working hands-on with cows that need additional attention every morning and working with the veterinarian to ensure that they receive the attention needed, and maintaining records of all treatments.
- Identifying and evaluating cows with the AFI collar monitoring system for swift and effective intervention.
- Overseeing the maternity and youngstock programs, ensuring that calves receive a good start and care, protocols are adhered to, and replacement flow meets the needs of the dairy.
- Overseeing the reproductive program of the herd, managing synchronization schedules and heat detection with our AFI collar monitoring system. Breeding cows on TAI day as well as natural heats during the week and assisting with the synchronization of cows and recipients for our embryo transfer program.
- Managing the function and maintenance of 2 parallel parlors, maintaining equipment and recording regularly scheduled maintenance.
- Evaluating performance of the milking team, working to maximize parlor efficiency while also ensuring protocol adherence and monitoring milk quality results.
- Diligent record keeping working in PCDart, AFI Farm and TMR Tracker programs.
- Supervision and tracking of cow movement.
- Learning to feed cows and heifers for occasional relief feeding as necessary.
- Generation of monthly reports to track success of calf health, cow health and reproductive performance.
- Working with our current consultants for reproductive management, nutrition, calf management and parlor management.
- Manage sand recycling and bedding systems to ensure maximum cow comfort and udder health.
- Occasional equipment operation when extra hands are needed.
