Registered Dental Hygienist- Part-Time, Temporary

Western North Carolina Community Health Services (WNCCHS) is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). We are looking for a Registered Dental Hygienist– to provide professional dental services to complement the delivery of integrated team-based, whole-person, trauma-informed primary health care services through a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model of care.
The position is part-time for 18 to 27 hours per week to include (2) or (3) 9-hour workdays Monday through Friday. The Registered Dental Hygienist would clean teeth and examine oral cavity, head, and neck for signs of oral disease, educate patients on oral hygiene, take and develop x-rays, and apply sealants and fluoride treatment.
Education: Graduation from an accredited dental hygiene education program
Training: Satisfactory completion of educational program clinical rotations
Certification(s)/Licensure: Current and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Dental Hygienist in North Carolina
Experience: 2 Years’ Experience preferred
Additional skills required: Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs to produce correspondence, documents, presentations, records, and spreadsheets. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Additional skills preferred: Expert knowledge of medical office operations. Familiarity with role of FQHCs in the community
Key Responsibilities:
Take, review, and update medical history
Examine gums, using probes, to locate periodontal recessed gums and signs of gum disease
Feel and visually examine gums for sores and signs of disease
Feel lymph nodes for under patient’s chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate presence of oral cancer.
Chart conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist
Take and develop dental x-rays
Administer local anesthetic agents (e.g. Oraqix)
Remove calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums, using dental instruments
Apply fluorides or other cavity-preventing agents to arrest dental decay
Remove excess cement from coronal surfaces of teeth
Remove sutures and dressings
Provide individualized dental hygiene education and counseling to patients
Report to the supervising dentist all clinically relevant information about patients
Maintain dental equipment and sharpen and sterilize dental instruments
Clean, disinfect, and sterilize all instruments and equipment according to OSHA requirements, professional standards, and WNCCHS’ policies and procedures
Manage dental supplies in an efficient and effective manner
Collaborate with administrative staff to ensure proper billing and data-gathering on a timely basis
Participate in quality management activities
Work on Mobile Dental Unit as assigned
Occasionally, other appropriate duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor.
