Highway & Roads Market Sector Director
Primary Responsibilities
Market Sector Directors (MSD) are one part of the HDR matrix management structure that drive our business. At HDR, the Highway & Roads (H&R) market sector is the largest market sector in the company, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. The H&R market sector includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city, town, and local roads, and bridge structures that carry the same roadways. HDR provides a range of professional services including bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services.
This role requires an understanding of H&R clients, their funding and revenue streams, and their existence within state, federal, and local government structures. The primary responsibilities of the Highway & Roads Market Sector Director are divided into three areas:

The Director sets the vision for HDR’s strategy to expand and provide services to clients in this market sector. They work with regional and area leadership to achieve growth, develop staff, and meet financial goals. They coordinate strategies with various leadership roles and maintain communication to implement growth and operational plans.
The role involves supporting contractual relationships with clients across various regions, expanding HDR’s presence internationally, and engaging with local clients on a broad range of services. The Director also leads business development efforts, manages key client relationships, and participates in industry associations and partnerships to enhance HDR’s market position.
Responsibilities include overseeing strategic vision creation, client management, project leadership, marketing, pursuit activities, industry engagement, and strategic investments. Staff development involves managing profitability, technical excellence, staffing, and recruitment. Support to operations includes monitoring performance, managing project delivery, and ensuring quality standards.
