The American Red Cross is seeking an Executive Director to support the District of Columbia within the National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region.
What You Need To Know
We are currently seeking a professional, innovative, and enthusiastic Executive Director for our District of Columbia Chapter. Our offices are in Northwest Washington at our Red Cross Headquarters building, but we serve the entire city. This position is an external-facing role focusing on community relations/capacity building (focused on areas requiring more resiliency), fundraising, and board leadership. This candidate must be comfortable being the face of the Red Cross in the District. This position supports region-partnered mission initiatives by providing facilitative leadership to local teams and updating regional leadership on the community's needs and perceptions. Incumbents will also be responsible for strengthening relationships with our community partners by educating them on the programs and opportunities the American Red Cross offers. The Executive Director in this region is responsible for regional solid engagement and fundraising goals set by the National Headquarters team. This position reports to the Regional Executive, serves as the primary liaison to the community, and is supported by Community Volunteer Leaders and the Chapter Board.

• Dynamic Leadership of the District of Columbia Chapter: As the Chapter’s leader, you will be the vital link between the American Red Cross and the communities we serve, ensuring our presence is deeply felt and our mission creates lasting change. You will expand our impact, forging strong connections to ensure that the Red Cross is woven into the fabric of our communities.
• Building Transformative Relationships: You will be a key ambassador, cultivating meaningful relationships with influential community leaders, businesses, philanthropists, and elected officials. Your leadership will drive the achievement of chapter and regional goals by expanding the reach and capacity of the Red Cross in the District of Columbia and the larger DMV.
• Championing an Influential Board of Directors: You will develop and lead a diverse, influential, and well-connected Board of Directors, empowering these local champions to galvanize resources and support for the Red Cross. Your role will ensure the Board’s effectiveness in driving the Red Cross mission forward.
• Inspiring Strategic and Influential Leadership: As a visionary leader, you will inspire and motivate a high-performing team of volunteers and employees through influence to exceed fundraising, blood collection, and mission delivery goals. Your ability to think strategically and inspire others will shape the future of the Red Cross in our DC chapter and have a lasting impact within its communities.
• Creating a Culture of Inclusion and Belonging: You will leverage your influence to foster a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and belonging, ensuring employees and volunteers feel empowered to work as a cohesive, mission-driven team for impact and community outcomes.
• Visionary Chapter Planning: You’ll spearhead the chapter’s annual planning process, identifying key areas where we can make the greatest impact in the community. Your vision will directly shape the outcomes we deliver in partnership with the communities we serve.
• Key Regional Leadership Role: As a member of the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Regional Leadership Team, you will work closely with the Regional CEO, playing an integral role in shaping the direction and success of the American Red Cross in the region. Although this position doesn’t include direct reports, you will hold a pivotal role on the regional leadership team.
• WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:
  

Education: A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.
Experience: Minimum 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
Management Experience: NA
Skills & Abilities: Ability to work on a team.
Travel: May travel and participate in meetings and conferences throughout territory, state, and Red Cross system.

• Physical Requirements
  

Physical requirements are those present in normal office environment conditions. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs. Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software, and office equipment for sustained periods of time. May include sitting for long periods, driving a vehicle, and working under challenging conditions.

SALARY INFORMATION: The salary range for this position is $95,000 – 110,000 + incentives
Note that the American Red Cross sets salary ranges aligned to a specific geographic location in which the work is performed. The stated salary range in this posting is an average. The specific salary information will be shared at the time of phone screening based upon your location and qualifications.
