Up to £65.00 per hour (Umbrella)OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Principal Pipeline Engineer to join a growing Energy Transition team, supporting the design and delivery of low-carbon infrastructure projects across the UK.This is a key technical leadership role, responsible for developing and overseeing pipeline and mechanical engineering solutions across a diverse portfolio of transmission projects, including natural gas, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and wider energy transition systems.You will be part of a multidisciplinary engineering environment, contributing across the full project lifecycle—from concept and FEED through to detailed design, construction, operation, and decommissioning.Key ResponsibilitiesLead the development of pipeline and mechanical engineering designs across low-carbon transmission projectsDeliver engineering solutions across feasibility, concept, FEED, value engineering, and detailed design stagesProduce key technical deliverables including:Pipeline and AGI design packagesWall thickness calculationsPiping specifications and routing studiesUndertake pipeline routing studies, population density assessments, and high-pressure pipeline diversion designCollaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop integrated design solutionsSupport development of 3D models and plant layoutsProvide technical leadership within the pipeline and layout disciplineContribute to proposals, bids, and multi-disciplinary project submissionsEnsure engineering solutions are safe, cost-effective, and aligned with industry standardsRequired Skills & ExperienceDegree in a relevant engineering disciplineChartered Engineer status (or working towards IEng/CEng) with a relevant professional institutionStrong understanding of IGEM/TD/1, TD/13, and gas network operator standardsExtensive experience in pipeline and AGI design, including routing and high-pressure systemsStrong knowledge of national and international pipeline and piping design codes and standardsExperience working within multidisciplinary engineering environments and contributing to 3D plant modelsStrong understanding of engineering design processes, calculations, and scope developmentExperience resolving operational and integrity-related engineering issuesProficiency in Autodesk software, including:AutoCADAutoCAD Plant 3DNavisworksBIM 360Strong MS Office capability for technical reporting, specifications, and engineering documentationExperience working with clients, contractors, and stakeholders with varying technical and commercial requirementsKnowledge of ASME codes (desirable)Project ScopeProjects will span a range of energy transition and low-carbon infrastructure developments, including:Natural gas transmission (below and above 7 bar)Hydrogen pipeline systemsCarbon dioxide transport infrastructureFuture fuels and carbon capture systemsThe role also includes exposure to early-stage and first-of-a-kind technologies within the evolving energy transition sector.Additional InformationRemote working with periodic travel to key UK office locationsCollaborative, multidisciplinary engineering environmentOpportunity to work on nationally significant energy transition projectsHigh technical ownership and leadership responsibility within pipeline engineering disciplineSummaryThis is an excellent opportunity for a senior pipeline engineering professional to take a leading role in shaping low-carbon infrastructure projects that will define the future of the UK energy system.
