Director of Product Development
Henis Group
Job Description
Company Overview
Our client is a leader in custom, high-end upholstery, known for producing heirloom-quality furniture with a strong focus on craftsmanship, quality, and customization. Their collections blend traditional techniques with modern design, offering unique pieces tailored to individual client needs.
Position Overview
We’re seeking a highly technical, hands-on Director of Product Development to lead the design and execution of new furniture collections from concept through production. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in the sample room and on the factory floor as much as in strategy meetings—someone who understands the full development lifecycle and isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves to solve problems on the spot.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and participate in the development of new furniture designs with an emphasis on buildability and craftsmanship
- Oversee prototyping and sample creation alongside frame builders, pattern makers, and upholsterers
- Guide construction methods, materials usage, ergonomics, and overall product quality
- Work closely with the factory floor to resolve real-time design and engineering challenges
- Translate creative concepts into functional, production-ready designs
- Manage the full development process, including costing, testing, and specifications
- Ensure all products meet quality, comfort, and brand standards while remaining on time and within cost
- Mentor junior developers and model makers while fostering a culture of pride in craftsmanship
- Drive process improvements to elevate product quality and production efficiency
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in high-end furniture product development, including 5+ years in a leadership or senior technical role
- Proven hands-on expertise in upholstery, woodworking, finishing, and sample making
- Deep understanding of traditional craftsmanship and modern production techniques
- Ability to interpret design drawings, build and modify prototypes, and guide production improvements
- Strong project management and communication skills
- Proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and familiarity with shop-floor practices
- Bachelor's degree in Furniture Design, Industrial Design, Engineering, or related field preferred
- Willingness to be physically present on the factory floor and lead by example
Benefits
- 100% company-paid medical insurance for employees
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
- 401(k) plan with company match
- PTO, holidays, and a full week off at Christmas
- Shortened workdays on Fridays
- Employee discount on company products
- Opportunities for professional development and advancement
