ABOUT THE ARCHDIOCESE OF SEATTLE
Serving more than a million Catholics in Western Washington, the Archdiocese of Seattle includes 174 locations and 72 schools, with over 60 ministries and more than 500 weekly Masses celebrated in eight languages. The Archdiocese extends from Canada to Oregon and the Cascade Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. The Chancery is the Central offices supporting the Archdiocese. Each position employed in the Chancery helps to extend the ministry of the Archbishop in particular ways as outlined in the position description.
The Archbishop is the visible principal and foundation of unity in the particular Church entrusted to him. In order to fulfill his mission, the Archbishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them. (Directory on the Pastoral Ministry of Bishops, 198)
GENERAL SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL PURPOSE :
The Chief Development Officer is a leadership position to develop and provide resources to support a broad number of programs within the Archdiocese of Seattle. The Chief Development Officer is responsible for engaging our community to cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with donors.
The Chief Development Officer works in collaboration with the Archdiocesan programs and ministries, St. Joseph Foundation Board members, and the Archbishop to implement a strategic fundraising plan, that meets the goals, values and resource needs of the Archdiocese.
NOTE: This is an appointed position by the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle and subject to Archdiocesan Policy pertaining to appointed positions. The Archbishop reserves the right to make modifications to the position description at his discretion and according to the provisions of canon law.
ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES :
- Strategic Leadership
- Serve as a member of the senior leadership team for the Chancery.
- Conduct activities in a manner that leads to successful annual, major, and planned gifts in accordance with all items.
- Prepare and implement an annual strategic plan in partnership with Chancery leadership.
- Responsible for the development team’s goal of achieving $5M+ annual fundraising and $14+M annual appeal goal.
- Fundraising and Donor Relations
- Manage a portfolio of 100 donors, create engagement and stewardship plans; lead and oversee efforts with development committee members, foundation board members, and staff to carry out plans.
- Produce, share, and oversee a strategic annual fundraising plan including milestone calendar, the Annual Catholic Appeal, the Crozier Society, special events, appeals, legacy society program, St. Joseph Foundation, matching gifts, and face to face engagement activities.
- Develop and document approaches and activities that lead to cultivation, solicitation, gift commitment, stewardship and donor recognition.
- Development and implement an annual stewardship plan.
- Interface with colleagues and volunteers regularly to execute annual fundraising plans, including but not limited to the Development Committee and Campaign Committee.
- Manage all aspects of the St. Joseph Foundation such as recruitment of foundation board members, fundraising, marketing, management, and execution of grant making process.
- Support stewardship and fundraising needs of ministries such as Agape Service Project and Seminarian education.
- Team Management
- Oversee a professional staff that includes Annual Catholic Appeal, stewardship, planned giving, major gifts, Crozier Society, legacy society, events, gift processing, and database management.
- Communications and Marketing
- Support marketing, branding, and communication efforts for development initiatives. Examples are campaign newsletters, collateral material for events, web content, solicitations, proposals, presentations, MailChimp e-marketing, and annual reports.
- Technology
- In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Development Operations, oversee database protocols for maintaining the information for donors, campaigns, parishes, and fundraising activities.
- Collaborate with Assistant Director of Development Operations on implementing database migration “Parish Staq.”
- Board Engagement
- Support the board and committees in fundraising efforts and provide regulate updates on development program.
- Train and engage board and committee members in donor cultivation and solicitation.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS :
1. Primary :
- Willingness and ability to support the mission of the Church by extending the ministry of the Archbishop
- Ability and desire to use God-given gifts and talents in service of the local Church in support of the collaboration between lay and ordained Ministers
- Must be an active member of a parish/faith community in good standing with the Church
2. Education :
- Bachelor’s degree - preferably in Fundraising, Business, Public Relations, Communications, or related field; or equivalent relevant experience
3. Experience :
- Minimum Seven years’ experiencein fundraising.
- Fundraising experiencein a large complex organization is preferred.
- Raiser’s Edge or similar CRM database proficiency preferred.
- Successful leadership experience and ability to motivate and supervise staff with a strong emphasis on planning and managing various functions.
- Demonstrated successful experience in several development functions such as major gift, and planned giving, directing annual appeals, sacrificial giving/stewardship programs.
4. Other Elements :
- Knowledge of and compatibility with the mission of the Catholic Church, aworking knowledge of the Catholic parish structures and organizations, the Church’s ministerial and pastoral work, and Catholic identity.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, with demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings, conduct oral presentations and write documents and reports.
- Demonstrated ability to enable staff to accomplish goals through collaboration, collegiality, and team organization.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends, and available to the Archbishop.
- Ability to work with people of various economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.
- Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license.
Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
