POSITION TITLE: Director, Legal Affairs and Compliance (Employment Litigation, Advice and Counsel)
COMPENSATION: $180,000 - $215,000 Annually
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Director, Legal Affairs and Compliance (Employment Litigation, Advice and Counsel) is a key member of the Legal team, reporting directly to the General Counsel. This critical role serves as the primary advisor on employment-related legal matters, with a strong emphasis on managing complex litigation and regulatory compliance across the organization’s operations. The Director will drive strategic legal initiatives focused on minimizing risk, ensuring compliance with rapidly evolving federal, state, and local employment laws, and proactively advising the business and HR partners on a wide range of employment-related matters. The role requires deep experience in managing employment litigation and pre-litigation disputes, conducting internal investigations, and navigating high-stakes issues such as terminations, whistleblower claims, harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and wage and hour compliance. This position requires strong expertise in employment law, exceptional communication skills, and a proactive, solutions-oriented approach to legal risk management in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:
- Lead and manage all employment-related litigation, dispute resolution, administrative charges, and investigations, including the development of legal strategy, oversight of outside counsel, supervision of case progress, coordination of discovery efforts, and negotiation of settlements.
- Serve as a subject-matter expert on employment litigation risks, providing regular updates and education to internal stakeholders and leadership teams.
- Oversee Company’s response to records requests and subpoenas in accordance with applicable deadlines and laws.
- Provide daily legal advice and strategic counsel and support to HR, executive leadership, and business units on a broad range of complex employment law issues and compliance matters, including hiring, performance management, employee discipline, leaves of absence, accommodations, and terminations.
- Monitor and interpret developments in employment law and regulation, and proactively adjust legal and compliance strategies to ensure continued adherence.
- Develop, revise, and implement employment policies (including hiring practices, performance management, employee relations, internal investigations, terminations, leaves of absence, accommodations, wage and hour, compensation, and benefits), training programs, and best practices on HR and employment law topics aligned with applicable laws/regulations and organizational goals.
- Review and revise company documents, marketing materials, customer/vendor contracts particularly as they relate to employment law and compliance.
- Draft and revise employment-related agreements (including offer letters, confidentiality and intellectual property agreements, and separation agreements), and train HR on usage of appropriate templates.
- Analyze and review employment status determinations (e.g. exempt/nonexempt).
- Any additional tasks as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- J.D. from a nationally recognized law school.
- Member in good standing with CA State Bar.
- 5+ years of experience in employment law counseling and litigation under applicable federal and state law.
It would be great if you had these:
- Demonstrated expertise in managing complex employment litigation and regulatory matters, with experience across multiple jurisdictions.
- Prior law firm experience as well as in-house experience strongly preferred.
- General corporate/transactional/business law experience a plus.
